Becoming a mother has been a transformative journey. As a provider supporting many families through their perinatal period, my educated brain knew what to expect, but all that knowledge went right out the window when I experienced it firsthand. Amid the sleepless nights, constant feedings, and the overwhelming flood of emotions, I realized the immense importance of self-care. I have always prioritized self-care and know the value of perinatal chiropractic care, but my first-hand experience has shed some light on how I can now help others navigate this period with grace.
The most significant contributor to my healing was getting adjusted; yes, it helps to have my husband as a chiropractor. I have received weekly adjustments for the last ten years, ensuring my body maintains alignment and my nervous system regulates stress at its absolute best. I knew prioritizing self-care throughout these years would allow me to assist our office members better. I see the power of adjustment in reducing pain, improving brain cognition, improving sleep, and overall well-being, but postpartum adjustments brought this understanding to a whole new level.
After giving birth, I felt like I was floating, not fully grounded or in my body. The first few days, I was running off of the adrenaline. It was not until after being adjusted that I felt I was back in my body and it could begin to heal. For many, the postpartum period presents with persistent aches and pains, usually from the changes in the daily routine of feeding, carrying a baby, hormonal changes, and recovering from a marathon pursuit. Every birth experience is unique but comes with new experiences (physically stressful vaginal delivery or a Cesarean section, introduction of medications such as an epidural, Pitocin, magnesium, etc, and the mental/emotional roller coaster) that need to be integrated. Enter chiropractic care. The adjustments assist the body in processing these stresses so they do not get locked in the body, and if they have, they can be released. It will enable the body to go back into alignment for proper pelvic healing and pelvic floor function, reducing nervous system stress for optimal healing.
As new mothers, our nervous systems are often on overdrive due to the constant demands of caring for a newborn. Regular adjustments have helped me feel more centered and calm, which was crucial in managing the new challenges of motherhood. They have also supported my body’s recovery, making it easier to enjoy these precious moments with Whelan. I feel like they have improved my sleep and cognition, kept me pain-free, and sped up my pelvic recovery!
Self-care is essential through this transition as your well-being directly impacts your ability to care for your little one(s). Prioritizing your health is not a luxury—it's necessary!
